About Event

📉 Is the internet supposed to suck, or did someone make it this way?

In Enshittification, author and activist Cory Doctorow gives a name to the seemingly inevitable decay of our favorite online platforms. Doctorow explains the three-stage process where platforms go from being good to users, to abusing users for the benefit of business customers, and finally, abusing business customers to seize all the value for themselves. Drawing on examples from giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, and TikTok, the book diagnoses why the internet feels increasingly hostile and what we can do to fight back.

☕ 1:30–1:45 PM — Settle in, grab a drink

📖 1:45–4:00 PM — Moderated group discussion

We’ll dig into:

  • The Enshittification Cycle—From user-friendly to user-abusive. Is this just capitalism, or something more like feudalism?

  • Locked In—How do high "switching costs" and the death of interoperability keep us trapped on dying platforms?

  • Is There a Way Out?—Can regulation, trust-busting, and "adversarial interoperability" actually save the internet?

🛠 How Our Book Club Works

  • Read the book—or audiobook, articles, podcasts, even summaries.

  • Didn’t finish? Come anyway!

  • First-timers welcome. Bring a friend
