Ethical Visual Storytelling in the Age of Technology, Conflict & Child Rights
In a world where an image travels in milliseconds, a child’s face in a vulnerable situation can be uploaded, shared, and forgotten in the span of a scroll.
This panel discussion invites us to pause and ask:
What does it mean to see ethically? To photograph responsibly? To tell stories that illuminate rather than exploit?
Organised by UNICEF-Giga as part of Swiss Photomonth, the session builds on the Giga Photo Contest and brings together leading photographers, editors, and academics to explore the ethics of visual storytelling at the intersection of technology, conflict, and childhood.
We’ll discuss:
Conflict & Consent → How do we ensure informed consent in crisis zones, especially with minors?
Technology & Truth → How do AI, metadata, and digital manipulation affect authenticity and accountability?
The Future of Ethical Storytelling → What new frameworks, tools, and collaborations can shape responsible narratives?
Panelists:
Munira Mutaher — Global Photo Editor, Rest of World
Anush Babajanyan — VII Photo & National Geographic Explorer
Bassam Khabieh — Syrian photojournalist, author of Witnesses to War: The Children of Syria
Moderated by: Pascal Hufschmid, Executive Director, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva.
Introduction by: Danaé Panchaud, Director, Centre de la photographie Genève & Swiss Photomonth
After the panel, guests are invited to stay for a Networking Reception — an opportunity to continue the conversation, exchange insights, and connect with speakers & peers.
**Guests are also invited to stay after the Garden Party for the projection of the HEAD Cinema Festival at 20:00.
