Lunch and Learn - Artist/Scientist Ruth Maust

Ruth is a mixed media artist who derives insights and influences from her background in chemistry, sustainability, and the circular economy. As inputs for her art, Ruth collects materials that catch her attention, whether for their color, sheen, or translucency, or for some clue about how they were manufactured.
Her most recent work heavily incorporates flexible plastics, a class of materials that is notoriously difficult to recycle and which has a lifespan far surpassing its intended use. Ruth hopes that repurposing these materials as an art medium will spark interest in and appreciation for the “stuff” around us that we typically overlook.
Ruth has a PhD in chemistry from the University of Oregon and currently works on chemicals and materials sustainability projects at WAP Sustainability.
