BoxBots - Robotics And Cardboard Hackathon
You are invited, to the robotics and cardboard hackathon!
THE TWIST
You get motors, drivers, sensors, and modules—but your builds must meaningfully use CARDBOARD. Use it for the primary frame or for rapid shells/skins: robot-arm fairings, mecha panels, cable shrouds, enclosures, set dressing—go big, fast, and expressive.
(3D printing is fine for precise mounts/gears—just don’t let it replace the cardboard.)
WE WILL PRINT A BUNCH OF CONNECTORS HINGES/BRACKETS TO SPEED UP YOUR BUILD!
Why cardboard?
Scale + speed. Cut, fold, glue, iterate. Meter-scale prototypes in hours instead of days.
Fairness guideline (simple)
Cardboard is a visible, substantial part of the build (structure or exterior).
Don’t hide a fully printed rig inside a token paper wrap.
Judging boost
Smart structural use or standout aesthetics with clean integration gets extra points.
Show a 30–60s test/demo clip (movement, load, durability).
Why are we hosting this event?:
Outside school, it’s rare to find a place that says “build for the fun of it,” especially in hardware where tools, time, and cost stack the deck. We’re creating that place. This is for creative misfits and stubborn builders. Bring the weird, the ambitious, the beautiful. Make the most inventive, fun, artistic thing you can. That’s it.
Event includes:
All the tools, parts and space you will need (you can bring extra parts or tools that you specifically need)
Mentors to guide you in case you get stuck
We will provide all meals
Workshops:
Structures with cardboard
Basics of microcontrollers
Sketching and CAD
