LisboaUX #5 with TheStarter: Design, Society and Transformation
After a summer hiatus, we're back to talk about designing for society and for transformation. "Design can create the conditions for multi-species collaboration and placemaking".
The talks are preceded by a co-working event for designers that you can join here. And followed by a dinner with the speakers. Unfortunately, our number of seats is fairly limited.
Join our community on Slack so you can get to know other designers, events and job opportunities.
About the Speakers
Rui Quinta, Co-Founder at With Company
Rui Quinta co-founded the already extinct Peixaria Centenária, the space experience design studio Toyno Studio, the exploratory research lab Transformative Times and With Company, a Lisbon-based transformative design company, from where he tries to help others better everything. He’s an invited lecturer of Futures, Strategic Design and Innovation at ISEG, and teaches Experimentation and Strategy at FH Salzburg. Since 2012, he’s been inspiring teams on Design Thinking and Innovation with the Hasso Plattner Institute from Potsdam and Porto Business School, where he was recently appointed Program Director and Co-Program Director of the Systemic Thinking for Innovation programme.
We ask to keep asking, we design to keep designing. This talk explores design as a model for coordinating complexity. It brings two stories: BUPI, the Portuguese Government’s Land Registry program that reimagines the country’s future through its territory, and a speculative UNDP project envisioning new governance models for 2040. It reflects on how design goes beyond creating products or services. Design can create the conditions for multi-species collaboration and placemaking. Guided by the metaphor of a deified stone, an artifact that both receives and returns questions, the talk highlights the importance of asking and designing not as an end, but as a transformative practice.
Mariana Pena Monteiro, Co-Founder at Tomorrow Services
Mariana is the co-founder of Tomorrow Services and obsessed with public sector innovation. She started working as a UX Designer and moved to Service Design, where she fell in love with simplifying services and stopping bureaucracy. She spent the last 10 years of her career working with Ministries and Councils across the UK and EU, helping them redesign their resident-facing services and improve backend processes.
A service is something that helps someone do something, whether you’re buying a car, moving to another country, renewing your ID Card or applying for social housing. Of course much of that can be done online. But the digital world needs to connect to the real world, so we have to zoom out and design all touchpoints of a service. This process is what her talk will map and highlight.
