About Event

Small island nations like The Bahamas face extreme fuel costs, climate vulnerability, and fragile marine ecosystems—all exacerbated by a reliance on fossil fuel-powered vessels.

This Climate Week panel introduces an ambitious solution: Fleet-in-a-Box, a turnkey pilot program delivering electric workboats and solar-powered charging stations to underserved Bahamian islands.

Spearheaded by Environmental Defense Fund, University of The Bahamas, Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association, and electric propulsion company Photon Marine, the initiative showcases how marine electrification can advance climate resilience, energy equity, and economic development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Panelists will unveil key findings from a new national feasibility study and announce the first Fleet-in-a-Box deployment in Acklins and Crooked Island—complete with boats, solar microgrids, and community-led implementation. The session will share details on a first of its kind credit facility to accelerate maritime decarbonization.

Attendees will leave with actionable insights into island decarbonization, a firsthand look at electric vessel technology (including a live demo and sea trials), and partnership opportunities to scale this model across the Caribbean and beyond. Fleet-in-a-Box isn’t just a concept—it’s a replicable, fundable, ready-to-deploy solution redefining clean marine transportation for vulnerable nations on the frontlines of climate change.

Panelists:

  • Ann-Marie Albury, Executive Director Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association

  • Marie Hubatova, Director, Global Shipping, Environmental Defense Fund

  • Simon Dent, Managing Director, Outrigger Impact

  • Marcelino Alvarez, CEO & Co-Founder, Photon Marine
