Mequation shows you just how small the probability is that you exist.
Artist Thijs Biersteker (Woven Studio) and astrophysicist Yamila Miguel (Leiden University) have collaborated to create the world's first scientific equation that lives entirely, and only, within an art installation. Together, they've turned one of science's most staggering ideas into something you can walk into and feel.
The installation computes the specific probability of your existence at this exact moment in time — drawing on scientific data to make the abstract visceral, and the cosmic personal. It asks what it actually means to be here: the chain of events, choices, and coincidences across billions of years that converged in you.
And then it asks what you do with that.
Thijs Biersteker is a three-time TED speaker whose work has shown at Fondation Cartier, the Stedelijk Museum, COP16, and SXSW. He doesn't make art about data — he makes data something you can't look away from.
CIIIC presents Mequation as part of NL House, and exists only here, only on June 3.

CIIIC is the Dutch Creative Industries Immersive Impact Coalition, a Dutch government project with a mission is to strengthen the Dutch Immersive Experiences industry and put it on the map as an open program, creating both economic and societal impact.

Presented by New Dutch Wave and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, created in collaboration with Dutch Digital Design, Creative Industries Immersive Impact Coalition, EIT Culture & Creativity, the City of Amsterdam, ROM Utrecht Region, Innovally, Gielissen, WT Interactive, and Dentsu Lab.
