Chucha Studios Presents — Our Roots, Our Future: Stories of Home and Resilience.
Join us for the opening night of this weekend’s visual installation featuring two films directed by Herrana Addisu, The River and Welcome Home. Together, these works explore how our past informs our future, and how culture serves as both foundation and education for generations to come.
The evening begins with a cocktail hour at 6:00 pm and screening at 7:00 PM, followed by a talkback with filmmaker Herrana Addisu. The installation will remain on view throughout the weekend during gallery hours.
The River pays homage to Ethiopian culture and the experiences of women, drawing inspiration from Herrana’s childhood home, Kebena. Produced by Qene Films, the film celebrates beauty while confronting systemic barriers women face, including forced marriage, limited education, and restricted access to water.
Welcome Home honors the legacy of George Carty, affectionately known as Uncle George—a Trinidadian immigrant who built his life and community in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. In collaboration with Black Archives Through a curated collection of archival photographs collected by his nephew, Omari Maynard, the series illuminates the power of historical identity and cultural preservation.
