AI — a critical discussion of the environmental and social costs
Scientist Rebellion is hosting a panel discussion at Tiedekulma (Think Corner) on what Artificial Intelligence (AI) means for Politics, Civil Society and the Climate.
In the last couple of years, AI has rapidly transformed society as well as the academic world. It fuels our ever growing demand for more efficiency but the costs are paid by the environment.
In addition, the increasing prevalence of genAI raises important questions in other arenas relevant to mitigating climate change and maintaining human wellbeing across the globe: issues such as the monopolization and manipulation of information, the further concentration of power into the hands of political and economic elites.
Usage of AI is a form of consumption, and like all consumption should be undertaken in a considered and intentional way and aligned to the global development goals of responsible consumption, clean water, reduced inequalities, quality education and climate action. Academia is perfectly placed to lead this discussion.
This is the first part of a two-part workshop series on how we can use AI responsibly. The first session will be a panel discussion to gather information on different aspects of AI and how it can be used ethically and responsibly from a broader socio-economic perspective.

Denise Utochkin, Post-Doctoral Researcher in 'AI' abolition, radical novelty, and algorithmic fairness at the University of Copenhagen
Sophie Song, Research Associate at the Distributed AI Research Institute focused on the intersection of AI and workers
