Imagine solarpunk worlds — as diverse and colorful as our global societies — powered by fresh frontier Chinese tech ⛵️

SAIL is a monthlong (mu-long 🤓) solarpunk and artificial imagination laboratory in conjunction with muShanghai.

muShanghai: Be a Chinese builder for a month.
SAIL: Be a global solarpunk dreamer too while you're at it!

What is invented in China today
enables how people might live tomorrow
everywhere (not just China)
and especially across the global South 🗺️

What are the solarpunkiest versions of these worlds imaginable? 🤔

What about we SAIL there, together? ⛵️

SAIL is hosted by Seapunk Studios in collaboration with Stanley Qiufan Chan (陈楸帆, Chinese sci-fi writer) and muShanghai.

ℹ️ What to expect TL;DR

  • SAIL studio at muShanghai campus

    • Solarpunk lounge and library

    • Imagination hub — meet / share / remix ideas with other Sailors!

  • SAIL sessions

    • Writing workshops

    • Reading / film / game groups

🌅 Solarpunk & Artificial Imagination

Why SAIL? Why China? Why now?

How we live today exists downstream of what was invented yesterday. We now find China and Chinese technologists at many of today's frontiers: AI, biotech, robotics, solar panels, electric vehicles, and more. What tomorrows might we find downstream from these?

How might today's frontier inventions shape how we live tomorrow across our diverse multicultural world, especially across the many different societies and development levels of the Global South (where Chinese tech's scale, modularity, and affordability has helped make it part of everyday life)?

This is not just a question of tech, but of how (different) societies use tech, and how they adapt, learn, and evolve with it. This is not just about science — it's about science fiction.

Solarpunk

Enter solarpunk. Solarpunk is a creative genre about positive visions of sustainable human futures. Solarpunk is not just interested in what science and tech enable; it is interested in exploring and imagining hopeful 'happy ending' versions of our worlds.

Artificial Imagination

In Chinese, the term for 'artificial' (as used in 'artificial intelligence', etc.) is ren-gong (人工) or 'man-made'. Unlike in English, where 'artificial' often connotes unnatural or inferior imitations of the 'real' thing (as with artificial sweetener or artificial grass), ren-gong in Chinese evokes a positive sense of the potential of human creativity, invention, and imagination. Ren-gong is about human possibility.

SAIL is about applying this lens of human possibility to imagining the systems and societies accompanying our new technologies. When cars were invented, we had to also imagine road systems, seat belts, traffic lights, and suburbs — none of which had clear 'natural' predecessors. What artificial imaginations will we need to accompany an era of abundant solar, affordable robotics, DIY drones, AI-in-everything, and so on? How might future societies handle safety? Access? Reliability? Volatility? Cultural relevance?

These intersections of solarpunk and artificial imagination are what SAIL is about. And we can't imagine a better place for it in 2026 than Shanghai.

🐣 Laboratory — where anyone (yes, you too!) can solarpunk

SAIL isn't just about solarpunk and artificial imagination. It's also an open laboratory, where you can get involved in imagining and creating solarpunk ideas, visions, and worlds, along with other fellow Sailors from around the world!

Many people have ideas for new technologies and their possibilities, but sometimes feel that they don't have the right background or education or qualifications to write or share them.

Well, this is a punk lab. The spirit of punk is that anyone can DIY. At SAIL we will have resources and workshops so that anyone — regardless of language, tech capability, education, or experience — can get started imagining characters, systems, protocols, and worlds.

So not only will you have the chance, at muShanghai, to be a Chinese builder for a month. With SAIL, you will also have the chance to be a global solarpunk dreamer for the same month — so you can take all the inspiration you get from learning about frontier Chinese tech and apply it to imagining what possibilities this might unlock for the places, people, and societies you know and care about most.

muShanghai will gather builders from dozens of countries around the world. SAIL will be a place where many diverse dreamers and sailors can also meet and weave together.

🎟️ Access & Registration

SAIL is open to all muShanghai attendees (note: muShanghai's separate application) and generally free to attend.

SAIL's excursions and in-town events might have separate policies (e.g., if we host an event with a local art gallery, there might be a separate ticket charge, and it might be open to folks beyond muShanghai).

Registering for SAIL (via this Luma) will add you to our SAIL list and channel so you can stay up-to-date on SAIL activities and connect with other Sailors 🧑🏽‍🚀.

🪸 Hosts & Partnerships

SAIL is hosted by Seapunk Studios in collaboration with Stanley Qiufan Chan (陈楸帆) and muShanghai... but also many more collaborators!

We actively welcome local and global partners (since the purpose of both muShanghai and SAIL are to connect global builders-dreamers-sailors with frontier Chinese ecosystems). Please reach out if you would like to explore collaborations.
