This event explores how artists have engaged with the natural and built environments through acts of performance and embodied media practices. The screenings and artist interviews bring together performance artists from China whose works discuss the relationship between the body and the environment—whether in ruins, factories, riversides, or urban peripheries—revealing how gestures of inhabiting, touching, and sensing the landscape can become a form of ecological thinking.
This event is designed as a part of the lecture series on Eco Media & Environmental Art, for Stony Brook University undergraduate course, Digital Media: History/Theory.
Lecturer: Yulong Hu (Stony Brook University)
Yulong Hu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Art History and Criticism program at Stony Brook University. Yulong is teaching an undergraduate course, Digital Media: History/Theory, at Stony Brook University, and this event is designed as a part of the lecture series on Eco Media & Environmental Art. Her research interests include media art, experimental film, and transnational popular culture. Primarily, she studies Chinese video art in the global context while exploring emergent forms of artistic production and their impact on the ever-changing audiovisual landscape.
Guest Speaker: Wang Chuyu
Wang Chuyu (b. 1974), performance artist and curator, active since 1990s. Wang Chuyu is a pioneer curator of Chinese Live Art Festivals. His works and curatorial events include Open Performance Art Festival (Beijing, 2000), “Fuck Off”exhibition (Shanghai, 2000) “Art Attack”Hong Kong Performance Art Exhibition 2002. Since 2003: DaDao Live Art Festival (Beijing). 2005: “China Live” UK touring exhibition. 2007-2016: Guyu Action Performance Art Festival. Since 2017, he continues to produce conceptual theatre and documentary work after Ant Dynamics(2021), shown at Yamagata International Doc Fest YIDFF (Japan), and Person(2023) Marseille International Film Festival (France)
Guest Speaker: He Ling
He Ling is a Changsha-based curator and artist, Director of Hunan Art Museum, Curatorial Department. Trained in Experimental Art major, Central Academy of Fine Arts(CAFA).Since 2005 he has promoted contemporary art in Hunan. He is member of the China Urban Sculptors Association; Vice Chair of the Hunan Oil Painting Society; Co-Director of Hunan Artists Association; Co-Director of Public Art, at Hunan Designers Association. He Ling has organized or participated in 100+ exhibitions and cultural programs, edited/illustrated over a dozen publications, and authored 50+ essays and interviews.
Following the screening, Yulong Hu will offer a brief lecture situating these practices within the broader history of environmental and performance art. Her talk will trace how Chinese artists since the 1990s have used the medium of performance to negotiate the entanglement between human presence and changing environments, both urban and rural. In particular, she will highlight projects such as xianchang (on-site) environmental art initiatives that have taken art outside institutional settings into public and natural spaces, expanding the possibilities for experimental, socially engaged, and ecologically aware practices in China.
