Navigating Service Design Careers: Job Application Strategies
Welcome to the Service Design Careers’ 2026 series.
Service design is a rewarding field to work in and a confusing one to break into. Job titles vary wildly, and the work looks very different in agencies, in-house teams, consultancies and government. It’s hard to know where you fit, let alone where to apply.
This session gives you the big picture and a clear plan for your search.
What we’ll cover
The service design landscape: what the work looks like across different contexts, the common roles and titles, and how they differ
Job application strategies: how to find the right roles to apply for, and how to position yourself so you stand out
Visas and applying as an international student: an overview of post-study work options and how to approach applications with them in mind
Who it’s for
Early-career service designers, students and recent graduates, and designers from related fields, such as product, UX/UI and design research, who want to move into service design.

About your host
I’m Disha, a senior service designer at the Cabinet Office (UK Civil Service) and founder of Service Design Careers. I’ve worked across the public and private sectors, including sustainability, pharma, mobility and luxury, with organisations like Google, Spotify, Sanofi and Camden Council. I lecture at the Royal College of Art, UAL, Glasgow School of Art, Politecnico di Milano and KISD, and have spoken at TEDx, Service Design Network and SDinGov.
I started Service Design Careers because I kept meeting talented designers who struggled to turn their skills into the right role. These sessions distil what I’ve learned from mentoring them.
