About Event

What Is This?

This is not a pitch competition. This is a build-a-thon.

The Open Energy Hackathon brings together engineers, developers, and hardware builders to work directly with real renewable energy equipment: solar inverters, EV chargers, battery storage systems, and energy meters. You will write code that controls physical hardware. You will build integrations that solve problems communities are facing right now.

Hosted by Energy IoT Open Source (EIOT), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Associate Member of the Linux Foundation Energy, this is our second annual hackathon dedicated to open source energy technology.

Last year, 90 people registered for our inaugural event during SF Climate Week. This year, we are scaling up with more challenges, more hardware, and more ways to make an impact.

Whether you are a firmware engineer, a full-stack developer, an embedded systems hobbyist, or an electrical engineer curious about microgrids, there is a challenge here for you.

Join us to experience first hand open hardware and software to solve some key energy challenges and help us translate the benefits with AI.

RSVP to save your spot for the event!

Challenges are listed below, join our Zulip channel, an open source Slack, to read the details.

Challenge Themes

  • Programmable Microgrid: Plug, Play, and Own Your Power

  • Revive Stranded EV Chargers with Open Source and SunSpec Standards

  • Flexible Interconnection Modeling: Design a Microgrid for a Constrained Grid Using EASI

  • Cooperative Cloud: Remote Microgrid Management at Scale

  • Flux AI Dev Kit: From Prototype to Production Hardware

  • Bring your own open energy challenge!

TEAM Structure

You can start viewing detailed info about the challenges on our community portal hosted in Zulip!

Teams will form on the day as well!
