About Event

Session for Chapter 11: Neuroevolution in the The Nature of Code, a book by Daniel Shiffman, creator of The Coding Train.

We're going through The Nature of Code, a guide to teaching computers how to simulate the real world, together! Each session pairs reading and discussion with hands-on coding or creative interpretation. Whether you’re a generative artist, creative coder, or just curious about how systems evolve, this series breaks open the core mechanics behind life-like digital motion and intelligence.

Resources

If you're new to the meetup, check out these kickoff slides to get oriented to the group's intention and structure, find links to helpful resources, info about the final art showcase, and more.

Dan Shiffman's Nature of Code course syllabus is also a great guide to the most relevant Coding Train videos and challenges for each chapter, plus links to cool art projects for inspiration.

Meetup format

This isn't a class or workshop – it's more like a book club or study group for creative coding. This is a community of artists helping each other learn and get inspired at a weekly meetup.

Each week, we'll discuss one chapter of the book, share new ideas we learned, show our projects to inspire each other, and experiment in code using p5.js. Those who consistently come will have more say in how the final showcase comes together.

How to prepare

You'll get the most out of each session if you engage with the Nature of Code book chapter in advance, play with interactive code examples, watch videos, and build something of your own.

Pre-requisites

Familiarity with p5.js, Processing, or any creative coding environment is helpful. Understanding of the fundamentals is assumed: variables, conditionals, loops, functions, objects, arrays, and object-oriented programming.
