AI Salon Rio de Janeiro #8
Made in Rio: The Academic Powerhouse Behind Brazil’s AI Revolution
We might not have the most startups in Brazil…
But nothing beats Rio’s academic landscape in computer science, engineering, and math: the foundation of artificial intelligence!
So, while there is a VC cluster in São Paulo, you will not find better builders than in Rio. Not to mention the carioca swagger.
Now, for one night, the brightest minds come together on one stage:
Fundação Behring de Inteligência Artificial, PUC-RJ, IME, IMPA, and Coppe.
Let’s talk about how Rio’s academia is forming the next generation of AI talent. How is it fostering startups? What talent needs to build their startup here, in Rio, instead of São Paulo? What is the importance for startups and companies to connect with academia? How can non-students take part in it?
P.S. We apologize in advance for the lack of diversity on the panel. It’s a reflection of a broader issue in AI, making it even more important for everyone to get involved!

It was founded in 1949 by legends like César Lattes (yes, the Lattes from the “Currículo Lattes”), here in Rio! They work with big centers like CERN and are leading national efforts in quantum computing, one of the frontiers that will redefine AI, by legend in Physics and Director João Paulo Sinnecker.
19:30 | Made in Rio: The Academic Powerhouse Behind Brazil’s AI Revolution
Behind most successful startups in Silicon Valley, there are not only students from Stanford and Berkeley but also professors who become advisors, board members, or part of the C-Level. Let's hear from our own reserchers on how to build:
Renato Cerqueira; Instituto Behring de Inteligência Artificial
Marcos Kalinowski; PUC-RJ
Aderson Campos Passos; IME
Lucas Nissenbaum; IMPA
Alexandre Evsukoff; Coppe
Also, meet our host: Guilherme Pereira (ex-TikTok, ex-Microsoft), and a rare blend of VC, Big Tech, and startup grit.
