About Event

Ever wonder what happens to your food scraps after they get collected at the curb? 🍕 🥦 🥐

Join us in October for a fascinating, behind-the-scenes tour of Recology’s commercial compost facility in North Plains, OR, which transforms more than 80,000 tons of material every year into nutrient-rich compost for local farms, gardens, and more.

You’ll see mountains of food waste in all stages of transformation — from fresh scraps to steaming piles alive with microbes — and learn how this process closes the loop, turning yesterday’s leftovers into tomorrow’s soil. It’s messy, fascinating, and surprisingly fun!

Timing:
The tour will last roughly 1 hour.

Attire:
❗️ Closed-toed shoes are required.
❗️ Long pants are required.
The tour takes place entirely outdoors, and depending on the weather, can be windy, cold, and wet. Bring a rain jacket or coat to keep you warm. Wear comfortable footwear that can get dirty – for example, work boots, your not-so-favorite sneakers, or rubber boots.

Safety:
The compost facility can be a busy place with loud noises, smells, and machinery. Recology will provide a safety vest. If you are sensitive to smells and dust, we’d recommend you bring a mask.

Parking:
There is a limited number of parking spaces available at the facility. As such, we highly recommend you carpool with someone. If you live in NE Portland – reach out – we may have a ride for you.

Location:
9570 NW 307th Avenue
North Plains, OR 97133
