What is Human Capital Quarterly?

The nature of work is changing fast. Presented by DC Public Library and Levy, the Human Capital Quarterly forum features workshops and talks led by local training programs, community-based upskilling initiatives, professional organizations, and industry leaders with real workforce insight. The goal is simple: bring together a wider range of contributors to the National Capital Region's workforce to share ideas and to lead practical, hands-on sessions.

Who it's for

If you're jobseeking, or simply someone who knows that work in this next decade is going to shift rapidly, join us for hands-on programming and conversations on April 14th. We'll have a special focus on climate and energy throughout the day, but the conversations will be relevant for anyone thinking about how to pivot their career, future-proof their skills, and navigate the uncertain future ahead of us all. We want people to come and engage with the range of opportunities and networks available to them for building skills, exploring careers, and making connections.

The Kickoff & Fireside chat: 12:00pm-1:15pm

DC is grappling with two seismic shifts at once: federal workforce downsizing and AI as a transformative force in knowledge work. We're confronting these problems at a scale and speed other cities will face later.

Our fireside chat with Clara Haskell Botstein, the Chief of Staff of DC's Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education, will focus on answering questions like:

  • What are we learning at the frontier about how to help build a resilient workforce?

  • What resources exist to help residents navigate their careers now?

  • What problems are our workforce agencies working to solve for the future?

In this conversation, we'll surface real data on where regional jobs are shifting, the skills employers are actually demanding, and how DC government is adapting its support infrastructure. Clara will share what she's seeing across workforce agencies and the Talent Capital initiative—from new automation tools that simplify access to services, to short-term credentials that actually move the needle, to how we're building a workforce strategy that plays to DC's unique strengths as a mission-driven region.

This is for anyone reckoning with career transition, unsure what work looks like in the next few years, or curious about what the region's trying to do differently.
