LDN: Forest City Designathon
Doors: 6pm
Start: 6.30pm
Lightning talks (5min each), followed by design workshops, followed by socialising.
Rt Hon Dame Patricia Hewitt DBE
A campaigner since her student days, Patricia helped found IPPR, one of Britain’s most influential think-tanks, before becoming MP for Leicester West in 1997. As Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Cabinet Minister for Women and Health Secretary, she introduced landmark changes including the smoke-free legislation, paid paternity leave and community interest companies. After leaving Parliament in 2010, she joined the boards of BT and EuroTunnel, chaired the UK India Business Council and led the NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board. She’ll explain why she’s backing Forest City 1 and how we could win allies in Whitehall and beyond.
Tara Austin, partner at Ogilvy
Winning over sceptics is hard. But it gets far easier if you understand the science of human behaviour. In this talk, Tara will share lessons and learnings from her advertising career and suggest strategies for bringing more people into the Forest City tent.
Paul Powesland, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
Barrister by day, Paul Powesland is also deeply passionate about protecting and representing the natural world. Creative thinking and more than a dash of a “you can just do things” attitude, have won him numerous successes in his ongoing work to replenish the natural environment around London’s third biggest river, the Roding.
In his lighting talk, Paul will talk about his battles with environmental bureaucracy, how working with architects creatively improved both the natural environment and the value return for developers and why the needs of nature are central to making the Forest City a success.
Tom Chance, CEO of the Community Land Trust Network
Tom Chance is the Chief Executive at the Community Land Trust Network, a national charity and membership body working to make the community ownership of land and affordable housing commonplace.
He worked for seven years at the Greater London Authority, where he developed a considerable expertise in housing and planning policy. Prior to that he was a freelance programmer and web developer.
